RESEARCH SPACE H

Measurement, Evidence & Research Infrastructure

How can complex longitudinal human–AI systems be observed, measured, reconstructed and studied in a scientifically traceable way?

What this space studies

The measurement and research infrastructure for the other seven spaces. Concretely: kernel, runtime, provenance, datasets, metrics, and the Observatory and SELFGRAPH systems as measuring instruments.

Central questions

  • How can change be observed over long periods?
  • How does it stay traceable where a statement comes from?
  • How is observed evidence kept apart from inferred evidence?

Research object

Observing such systems reliably without confusing instrument, interpretation and object.

More than technical infrastructure

The research object also includes how measurement instruments, data models and research infrastructure themselves influence or distort statements.

Emergence has to be operationalized before it counts as a finding

In space H, emergence is a claim whose operationalization must be tested before it is reported as a finding. The space asks which statements are directly observed, which structure is derived from them, which hypotheses stay open and which temporal and relational data are needed. Without this separation, what was measured and what was interpreted blur together.

All research questions of this space (7)

  • Does a human–AI interaction improve, preserve or deteriorate over months and years?
  • How can a measured trajectory be checked as genuine and not the product of instrument drift or a false state?
  • Which signal types can meaningfully be linked to interaction trajectories, and how would they be calibrated against established behavioral measures?
  • Which consent and privacy questions must be settled before any collection?
  • How can inferred human or system state remain distinguishable from direct observation?
  • When does system memory preserve continuity versus produce false continuity?
  • How can longitudinal changes be measured without confusing tool drift with real behavioral change?

How this space is investigated

Observation and relation

This space is examined as a measuring instrument before it measures.

Observation and relation

What is specifically observed

State, memory, provenance and replay are checked for whether they keep observed data apart from inferred data and make instrument drift visible. The Observatory stays in development until that check is evidenced. A view counts as observed only as far as its source can be traced. Emergence claims are kept in four separate layers: observed events with their timestamps, derived structure such as recurrence and stabilization, hypotheses about the mechanism, and the theoretical interpretation of emergence as such. Each layer carries its own label.

Further explanation

Observatory and SELFGRAPH are research systems with their own ontology. The space also checks how emergence can be operationalized: which statements are observed, which structures are derived, which hypotheses stay open, and which temporal and relational data would be required for this.

Relation to the other spaces

This space carries all other spaces. Longitudinal and distributed research requires persistent state, memory, evidence, provenance and replay beyond ordinary session-based AI interaction.

System Integrity & Runtime

Understanding when intelligent systems degrade without producing an explicit error.

Central question

Where does the actual system state quietly diverge from its previously validated state, without an error, log or alert showing it?

System Integrity & Runtime

Scope
  • Drift
  • Regression
  • Contradiction
  • State divergence
  • Constraint loss
  • Repeated unsuccessful behavior
  • Runtime continuity
  • Recovery
  • Instrument drift
  • Confidence drift
  • Intervention & adaptation tracking
Approach

Compare expected against actual state over time, treat repeated unsuccessful behavior and constraint loss as a signal in its own right, and distinguish drift from genuine, intentional change before recovery is initiated.

Every measured change is checked to see whether the observed subject changed, or only the measuring instrument, before a deviation is treated as real.

Every deliberate change (to an interface, an interaction rule, model choice, a memory rule or an agent role) is kept as its own traceable record with an expected and an actually observed effect, so adaptation can be told apart from silent state loss.

Relationship

The runtime foundation behind the Observatory and MIRROR: without this space, drift stays invisible until it has already grown into a problem.

Memory, State and Identity

How a system, or an actor reconstructed from interaction, maintains a coherent state across sessions and years without unnoticed errors settling into it.

Central question

How does a system, or an actor reconstructed from interaction history, maintain a coherent state across sessions, restarts and years without unnoticed errors, outdated assumptions or apparent continuity permanently settling into that structure?

Memory, State and Identity

Scope
  • Working, episodic and semantic memory
  • System state and agent state
  • Interaction history as a memory source
  • Personal evolution graphs
  • Continuity across sessions and restarts
  • Pseudo-continuity and false memory
  • Hypothesis lock-in and confirmation feedback
Approach

Memory and state are organized into separate but contract-linked scopes (working, mission, episodic, semantic, research, artifact, personal and agent memory) rather than eight incompatible databases.

Every revision, contradiction and overwrite is logged rather than performed silently. Apparent continuity across sessions, such as through recurring terminology or external memory aids, counts as functional continuity.

It does not count as proof of genuine internal retention. Four recurring failure modes are checked for deliberately: outdated assumptions that are never revised, pseudo-continuity without real retention, mutually confirming interpretive feedback, and hypothesis lock-in, where a once-dominant reading absorbs contradicting evidence rather than being falsified by it.

Relationship

Shares its evidence discipline with Reconstruction, Perspective & World Models and its drift perspective with Measurement, Evidence & Research Infrastructure, but asks a distinct question: whether the memory and identity structure carrying a state across time stays reliable in the first place. SELFGRAPH is the system represented for this space.

Evidence & limits

Four layers of an emergence statement

Observed are individual events with timestamp and context. Derived is a structure such as recurrence or stabilization, computed from such events over time. A hypothesis is the reading that interaction between components produces this structure. The theoretical interpretation is the concept of emergence that brings the layers together. It is not reported as a measurement result.

Required temporal and relational data

A statement about emergence needs temporal order: timestamped events, session and context identifiers, versioned states and provenance for each statement. It needs relations: who reacts to whom, which handoff carries which result, and which component holds a state. Without relational data only co-occurrence can be established, not effect. It also needs a control dataset in which the pattern should be absent.

Stability and the boundary to correlation

Stability is tested by checking whether the pattern recurs across time windows, sessions and contexts (recurrence, cross-context recurrence) and changes when conditions are deliberately varied. An emergent structure is more than a correlation: two quantities that occur together say nothing yet about how something arose. Only when the structure cannot be sufficiently explained by individual components, direct rules or mere repetition is it a candidate for emergence. It then remains a hypothesis until interventions support it.

Alternative explanations: status of testing

Alternative explanations include model or tool upgrades, changes of task, instrument drift, false continuity between sessions and confounding. Hypothesis H5 and space A name them as conditions under which a change may not count as an effect of the interaction. The existing entries contain no completed systematic test of these alternatives. They are open test questions and not excluded explanations.

Boundary of this space

Measurability is not the same as truth. Instruments, data models and metrics capture only what they can operationalize, and can themselves create systematic blind spots.

How to read status and origin

Every statement carries its status (observed, inferred, hypothesis, planned or unknown), no program is externally validated, and origin statements about systems are candidates.
