RESEARCH SPACE B

Human Cognition, Behavior & Externalization

Which cognitive working practices become visible in long-term human–AI interaction, how do they change, and under which conditions are parts of them externalized?

What this space studies

How a person's thinking, decision-making and working practices change when they work with AI repeatedly. Externalization is a central mechanism of EIL research here: some systems and methods exist because recurring cognitive working practices became observable, explicit and formalized.

Central questions

  • Which thinking steps does a person hand to the AI, and which do they keep?
  • How do decisions and self-correction change over time?
  • When does a recurring human way of working become an explicit, reusable and possibly computational structure?

Research object

How this space is investigated

Observation and relation

Only what shows in behavior is studied: corrections, strategy shifts, repetitions, decision trajectories.

Observation and relation

What is specifically observed

These count as observed. The thinking operation behind them is inferred or hypothesized and carries its counter-evidence. Where the traces give nothing, the label is unknown.

Further explanation

This space keeps two levels of human cognition apart. The first is general cognitive research on humans. It asks how individual thinking strategies emerge and change, and how cognitive development arises through experience and interaction with the environment. It also covers the influence of social relationships on behavior and self-models, metacognitive processes and self-correction, and the emergence and change of self-images. The second level is the specific human–AI process. Here the question is whether and how repeated work with an AI system changes such patterns or produces new ones. Human interaction with AI counts as one possible condition for the emergence of new cognitive patterns. Other conditions, such as task, environment and social relationships, have to be considered separately. Behavior, subjective report and an inferred cognitive process are kept apart. Intention and actual behavioral effect are kept apart as well, because they need not coincide. Consciousness, the subconscious, introspection and subjective experience are exploratory objects of this space. They become accessible through report, self-observation and behavior. Without evidence, inner states are not treated as measurable. This space makes no claim about consciousness in AI systems. The programs Introspection & Self-Analysis and Consciousness & Subconscious Processing belong to this space, as does the reconstruction of perspective on oneself in the program Perspective Modeling & Cognitive Reconstruction.

Relation to the other spaces

This space is the starting point of the research loop. A recurring thinking operation becomes visible here first. Afterwards, Reconstruction, Perspective & World Models reconstructs it, Computational Interaction & Cognitive Modeling represents it computationally, and Distributed, Agentic & Collective Intelligence externalizes it as a role in an artificial system.

Behavioral & Interaction Intelligence

Using behavior and interaction as evidence about system state, constraints and decision dynamics.

Central question

What system state, relationship or mechanism best explains the observed behavior and the available evidence?

Behavioral & Interaction Intelligence

Scope
  • Behavioral patterns
  • Decision dynamics
  • Interaction effects
  • Adversarial behavioral analysis
  • Deviation patterns
  • Prediction-relevant behavior
  • Recursion depth of dependent revision cycles
  • Turn coupling & repair cycles
Approach

Collect behavioral traces and decisions over time, compare them against expected patterns, adversarially test deviations instead of explaining them away immediately, and only classify findings as prediction-relevant once they survive a counter-evidence test.

Repeated deviations are scored by the number of materially dependent revision steps rather than the sheer count of repetitions.

Every observed behavioral change is checked against plausible alternative explanations (a model change, a shifted task mix, growing user experience) before it is attributed to a cause.

At the interaction level, this tracks how strongly consecutive turns are coupled in content, how terms get reused across turns, and how repair and clarification cycles develop into stable conventions or recurring disagreement.

Relationship

Supplies the behavioral evidence that Reconstruction, Perspective & World Models and Measurement, Evidence & Research Infrastructure build on, and feeds the Observatory's drift and role-stability signals.

Human & Cognitive Intelligence

How a person thinks, decides and revises their own practice with a language model as a standing part of the work.

Central question

What recurring thinking and working habits can be reconstructed from a person's long-running interaction history with a language model, without confusing observation with direct access to mental states?

Human & Cognitive Intelligence

Scope
  • Observable cognitive practice
  • Problem decomposition
  • Contradiction detection
  • Self-observation with AI
  • Method formation from repeated behavior
  • Personal longitudinal development
  • Cognitive offloading vs. amplification
  • Migration of cognitive primitives
Approach

Only directly observable behavior is coded first, before later framework terms are applied.

Decomposition, contradiction detection, evidence-seeking, revision and similar operations are derived from repeated interaction patterns across years.

A recurring habit only becomes a method once it has been explicitly named and evidenced repeatedly, and internal mental states stay separated from directly observed behavior.

The distinction is whether an operation is offloaded to the language model or genuinely amplified through the interaction, and whether a recurring thinking operation (such as contradiction detection or reconstruction) migrates from human reasoning, through the interaction, into a formalized method and later into a computational representation.

Relationship

Supplies the starting material the other spaces build on: a recurring cognitive practice becomes visible here first, before Reconstruction, Perspective & World Models reconstructs it and Distributed, Agentic & Collective Intelligence externalizes it as a standing agent role.

What is reconstructed in self-observation

Exploratory AI serves here as an instrument for inspecting one's own thinking.

Eleven variables that are reconstructed

Direct measurement of the brain is not claimed. The bridge to the neuroadaptive direction is methodological: state models estimated from interaction can later be compared with synchronized physiological evidence. No result exists yet.

  1. Style of problem decomposition.
  2. Hypothesis generation and pruning.
  3. Contradiction detection.
  4. Use of counterfactual and adversarial reasoning.
  5. Evidence seeking and source verification.
  6. Transitions between exploration and execution.
  7. Reconstruction of missing states or causal links.
  8. Changes of abstraction level.
  9. Decision revisions after new evidence.
  10. Externalization events: when a repeated practice becomes a protocol, agent or software feature.
  11. Meta-cognitive interventions: when the person deliberately changes how the AI should interact with them.
